Class Reunion of the Century

Elementary school years are marked by milestones of learning the basics in reading, writing and arithmetic, and by the early friendships and embarrassing hiccups that come with youth. For those who spent that time at the Davie School, they are among almost a century of experiences. This century spans the Roaring 20s, years of the Great Depression, wartime, social change and disco. Add in the Florida heat and a booming agricultural-turned-suburban small town, the stories of growing up in Davie have a unique style.

The Old Davie School 100th Anniversary Celebration will reunite the community that learned, played, skinned knees, and grew together in a special building in a town like no other. On May 10, 1918, the town gathered together to dedicate the new Davie School with speeches from officials and residents and songs by students. On May 10, 2017, a cocktail hour in the historic auditorium upstairs will kick off the countdown to the 100th Anniversary. Over the next year, we will continue to celebrate and highlight the experiences of alumni—teachers and students—through the decades. More information on the Centennial Gala and Festival in 2018 will be made available as well. Join our Alumni Network to receive the most up-to-date information.

Along with the 100th Anniversary, the Old Davie School Oral History Project will reach out to the Davie community and capture memories through recorded interviews from the perspective of those who experienced the town’s transformation from its agricultural roots to a suburban community after WWII to the 1980s. With a grant from the Florida Humanities Council and working with Dr. Sandra Norman and graduate students from Florida Atlantic University, the interviews will be made available online and in the museum exhibits. If you would like to participate in an interview, contact Kim Weismantle at education@www.olddavieschool.org for more information.

Sharing your experiences of the past as a part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration and ODS Oral History Project will lead in a new century of learning and memories at the Old Davie School and we are excited to welcome you back.
