MUSEUM EDUCATOR
Job Description:
Person needs to have a flexible schedule and a willingness to work as
needed. Must be self-motivated, organized, energetic, visionary, and the
ability to multi-task. Experience in developing and executing museum
education programming and interpretation. Some travel to local schools
and other venues required (provide own transportation). Reports to the
Executive Director. A mandatory background check will be performed.
Responsibilities:
- Work to make the museum a place of learning and a place where
interdisciplinary education comes from the power of living history
and a sense of place.
- Develop and implement all museum-related educational and public
programs (e.g., school tours,
Women’s History Tea, lectures, symposia, teacher workshops, scout
programs, family programs)
and manages all program arrangements (e.g., confirmation letters,
evaluations, and invoices)
- Work with teachers in developing programs in conjunction with
school curriculum
- Schedules tours for adults and school groups (tour reservations)
- Site supervision (manager) during school tours and
educational/public programs
- Conducts pre- and post-visits to schools
- Arranging “staff” for school tours
- Recruits and supervises museum docents, conducts training
workshops
- Assist with marketing (publicity) and grant writing to support
educational programs and activities
- Provides daily tours of site during open hours
- Manages position from school
- Help as needed prior to and during special events and
fundraisers
Qualifications:
Knowledge of educational practices and children's learning abilities.
Bachelor’s degree or working towards (college senior) with major work in
education or related field. Advanced degree in Museum Studies, Public
History, Education or related field preferred. Two years of museum
education or classroom experience preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft
Office software and web and computer technology, strong oral and written
communication skills, and the ability to work well with people required.
Bi-lingual a plus.
Compensation:
$28,000 - $32,000 per annum salary. Full-time exempt position. Must
occasionally work on weekends and evenings.
